How to Buy Used Laser Tag Equipment

Saturday, January 8th, 2011 | Permalink

By an eHow Contributor | Published by ehow.com

The world of laser tag keeps getting bigger as the technology evolves. If you’re thinking of purchasing your own laser tag equipment, watch out. A brand-new model may become obsolete by the time you finish your first game. One solution is to buy a used game set and sell or replace it when something more powerful comes along. Learn which game features are crucial and which are passing fads.

Instructions

Browse Used Laser Tag Sets

  1. Shop at flea markets or garage sales for used home laser tag sets. These should come with two tagger guns and two body sensor packs.
  2. Ask at your local arena or outdoor facility whether they have any used equipment for sale. They may sell off their old game pieces when they upgrade to new ones.
  3. Browse laser tag gamers’ message boards online. Some of these act as free classifieds.
  4. Shop online at “used” outlets, such as Amazon or eBay, for indoor or outdoor equipment (see Resources below). Indoor sets will cost less and not be as powerful as more rugged items meant for outdoor play or military simulation.
  5. Post a “laser tag equipment wanted” message on an online site such as craigslist.com or on a bulletin board at a game facility or video arcade (see Resources below).

Buy the Best Used Equipment

  1. Select an inexpensive home unit for impromptu games of backyard warfare with two players.
  2. Spend more and get a more advanced home system for experienced players, such as those with multiple game formats or indoor/outdoor capabilities.
  3. Buy outdoor team laser tag equipment for league play or as entertainment for family reunions or barbecues. Regulation teams are usually four per side. Consider this an investment.
  4. Select the most accurate and most expensive realistic-looking equipment for high-level play and simulated military mission practice.

Tips & Warnings

  1. Buy the right tool for the job. Units meant for indoor play won’t work well outdoors at all, thanks to lighting conditions and a wider field of play. Conversely, outdoor units won’t perform optimally inside the house.
  2. Have AA or AAA carbon batteries on hand if your unit needs them. Used laser tag sets may not come with the original demo batteries.
  3. Go in on a more expensive used set with a friend, or buy one for a club, such as scouts.
  4. Buying “used” sometimes means “abused,” so check on your seller’s return policy before you buy.
  5. Even used equipment can be a steep investment. Make sure you really like laser tag before you commit to ownership.

A Complete Guide to How Laser Tag Equipment Works

Friday, January 7th, 2011 | Permalink

Published by lazerrunner.com

It is important to be aware of the many different styles of equipment offered by various laser tag manufacturers, and to understand the differences, both functionally and visually.

Laser tag equipment has two basic purposes: Transmit Information and Receive Information.

Transmitting and Receiving Information is accomplished electronically by Radio Frequency (RF), Infrared (IR), Laser, Fiber Optics or a combination of two or three of these methods.

LAZER RUNNER uses a combination of Radio Frequency, Laser and Fiber Optic Technology in the transmission and receiving of information. This is the most efficient way to accomplish the transmitting and receiving of information.

• Radio Frequency (RF)

LAZER RUNNER has developed a RADIO FREQUENCY system that is like no other. Some RF systems are susceptible to interference causing game delays and poor communication. LAZER RUNNER is the only RF system that allows the equipment to change channels automatically if interference is detected, allowing smooth trouble-free laser tag play with no interruptions.

With the latest in micro technology, LAZER RUNNER uses a surface mount RF circuit board and internal antennae for transmission of critical data. This compact design is lightweight and eliminates the bulky circuitry and external antennas other laser tag manufacturers use. This makes the equipment much more durable.

Our engineers have developed a state-of-the-art RF laser tag system that is reliable, easily programmable, and provides players with necessary key statistics and Real Time Scoring. You can even place TV monitors in the lobby or playing arena showing players’ scores and rankings in Real Time!

To find out all about the money-making advantages of Real Time Scoring CLICK HERE to read the report entitled “Two Dirty Little Secrets That Most Tag Laser Manufacturers Don’t Want You To Know”

The hassle of using a keyboard for all day to day operations has been eliminated and replaced with an easy to use Touch Screen Monitor with simple step-by-step instructions. The hardwiring of the arena peripherals has also been eliminated, reducing the time for set-up and eliminating costly downtime. The LAZER RUNNER RF system is ready to go right out of the box. All software is loaded right at the factory.

EASY TO USE – EASY TO MAINTAIN!

• Infrared (IR)

Infrared systems make up approximately 80 percent of all laser tag equipment, and can range from extremely poor to fair quality. The potential problems with IR technology are numerous.

With infrared systems there is, in essence, two beams that are utilized ~ a laser beam and an ‘invisible’ infrared beam. The laser beam in infrared systems does not transmit data and is used for visual purposes only! The infrared beam (similar to what is used on your TV remote), that does transmit data, is collimated to try to travel alongside the laser beam. Unfortunately this design has several flaws:

  • Infrared beams cannot be focused to pinpoint accuracy thereby creating beams that vary from a few inches to several feet in diameter. What you aim at with your laser is not always what you hit with your IR beam.
  • These beams can become unaligned causing even greater error in targeting accuracy and operation of the system. These beams need to be regularly maintained and realigned.
  • Targeting range is limited.
  • The possibility of stray signals is very high (players get deactivated by IR that has bounced off walls or ceilings).
  • Game turnaround time is slow due to the time consuming downloading process required at the end of each game.

• Laser Transmission

LAZER RUNNER is the only laser tag system in the world that uses the actual laser beam for transmission of data. This is achieved through a low power (less than one milliwatt) laser diode. The benefit of this system is pinpoint accuracy. What you aim at is what you hit!

LAZER RUNNER is a true laser tag system.

Best of all, the range of targeting is fantastic – with well over 500 foot capabilities! Serious laser tag players, of all ages, demand this range and accuracy. The proof is in the repeat customers and in the profits. This technology makes LAZER RUNNER the most challenging of all the laser tag systems. There are no false hits or misaligned beams often experienced with old style IR laser tag systems. LAZER RUNNER keeps the players coming back for more!

There are times, however when you may actually want the game to be less challenging – like when little kids are playing. Press one button on the touch screen monitor and our system instantly makes the game easier to play for young kids. No other system offers this feature.

• Targets (Receivers)

Targets on laser tag equipment can be found mounted on vests, waist belts and phasers. The targets are usually lit by flashing or glowing LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes). Once targeted and deactivated, some equipment must be re-energized at a pod or a reactivation station. (This is a huge hassle). “Download” or “reactivation” stations slow down throughput and require maintenance. Only old style infra red systems have download stations. Any laser tag system with download or reactivation stations should be avoided altogether.

At LAZER RUNNER we have developed advanced fiber optic sensors to harness laser light. By incorporating fiber optics, LAZER RUNNER has eliminated the need for extra circuitry. As a result we have reduced the weight and increased the ergonomic appeal of our vests. But most importantly we have virtually eliminated all sensor problems that plague maintenance-prone IR systems.

Other laser systems require bulky receiver circuitry for each and every target area ~ front, back, shoulders, belts and phasers. These target areas are usually raised and covered by clear plastic for protection. Unfortunately these ‘raised’ areas are highly prone to wear and damage resulting in poor reception of signals, inaccurate scoring and down time. Malfunctioning vests translate to down time and lost revenue.

LAZER RUNNER has just one receiver board that does it all! LAZER RUNNER fiber optic targets are mounted flush with the vest. This greatly eliminates costly maintenance. Our vests are noticeably clean and streamlined, allow pinpoint targeting accuracy, and are visually stunning.

The LAZER RUNNER fiber optic sensors can be programmed to be one of six colors. This means every single LAZER RUNNER vest is exactly the same. You choose the colors, you choose the teams. You are no longer limited to the number of red vests and green vests, but can program blue, red, green, purple, orange and yellow teams in any number of players you desire.

Above all, the fiber optic vests take punishment. High tech, lightweight and critically durable. Our equipment takes a beating and keeps on going!

LAZER RUNNER fiber optic technology will give you a system that delivers endurance and profit.

• Phaser (Laser Housing)

These hand-held units vary from two-handed machine gun styles, to hand-held phasers. Phasers are usually attached by a cord to their vest. These units can provide the player with sound effects, time remaining, player’s score and other statistics.

LAZER RUNNER Phasers provide the players with all these features and more.

LAZER RUNNER uses hand held phasers. Hand held phasers are lighter in weight and more user friendly to customers of all ages than two handed units. Phasers also allow the customer to have one hand free to keep their balance when moving throughout the arena. Our phaser design has eliminated the “protruding barrel” that has proven to be a safety problem.

All LAZER RUNNER components were designed to incorporate the best features available in the industry.

Every piece of LAZER RUNNER equipment was built to be the best in the business . . . at a reasonable price!
